Jean Curran

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Irish artist Jean Curran (b. 1981) began her career as a photojournalist in Ireland and Africa before transitioning to fine art. Following an extensive apprenticeship in the near-obsolete process of dye-transfer printing, she shifted her focus to reinterpreting early ‘In Glorious Technicolor’ films as still photographic images. Curran is one of the world’s last remaining dye-transfer printers and the only artist globally to use this rare process as the foundation of her practice.

Her critically acclaimed series, The Vertigo Project, was her first exploration of this innovative technique, marking the beginning of her practice in reframing cinematic history through dye transfer printing.

Curran’s labor-intensive process demands meticulous technical expertise and a painter’s sensitivity. Her work challenges viewers to reconsider familiar cinematic scenes and reflect on the interconnections between photography, film, and painting. Through her transformative approach, she invites audiences to engage with cinema’s technological transitions and its visual language in an entirely new way
