THE EXHIBITION

Filip Black is a master of contrast and energy regulation. In his latest exhibition titled “From A to Š”, Black explores the duality of script, presenting Cyrillic in a Latinized world. Through his works, he illuminates stereochromy of colors, showcasing black and white in coexistence, while simultaneously sharing his unique life link between Dorćol and Brooklyn.

The exhibition “From A to Š” is more than a visual stimulus; it is a journey through the worlds that Filip connects with his work. Cyrillic, as the foundation of his artistic expression, becomes a medium that bridges different cultures and urban landscapes. Filip Black finds ways to figuratively change, transform, and transmute the font, incorporating it into the context of the streets of Belgrade or any other metropolis in the world. His works are deeply rooted in urban aesthetics but carry a universal message.

Black’s exhibition is a kind of map of his journeys and emotional connections with places that have shaped his artistic style and personality. Visitors have the opportunity to see how traditional Cyrillic transforms, crossing the boundaries of language and culture, while black-and-white contrasts turn into vivid stories.

OD A DO Š / FROM A TO Š

Nurturing our script is not a matter of traditionalism but rather a very contemporary expression. Script is the main guide through cities and streets, and Filip Black is very dedicated to observing the signs along the way. I say “observing,” not “reading,” because it seems to me that it is precisely this primal understanding of script that allows him to abstract it.

This results in signs that at first glance appear coded, but the well-known archaic nature speaks to us on a frequency that we all feel.

Filip, you are not readable, but we understand you!
