Speak Serbian So the Whole World Can Understand You

by nele karajlic

Monolog Gallery and Sanjaj Gallery presented “Speak Serbian So the Whole World Can Understand You,” a multimedia art installation by Nele Karajlic, at the Sava Ball in Vienna’s historic Hofburg. Set within the grandeur of the imperial palace, the installation paid tribute to Vuk Karadzic’s first Serbian vocabulary, published in 1818 in Vienna, where Serbian words were placed alongside their German and Latin counterparts. This work not only highlighted the linguistic and cultural bridge between Serbia and Austria but also celebrated the power of language in shaping identity and dialogue.

We express our gratitude to the Serbian Center in Vienna, which has been organizing this remarkable event for years, reinforcing both the Serbian community and its significance within the identity of Vienna itself. Thanks also to the many visitors who engaged with the installation with curiosity and playfulness, as well as to the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, for his presence and support.
